Mr Chan believes the art of cooking is balancing all ingredients together to give taste, colour and texture. His dishes will tantalise your taste buds and most importantly are all HANDMADE and HOMEMADE on the premises as seen by images of his Har Gow and Siu Mai Factory!
There are many restaurants to choose from in Edinburgh but the test of a good eating establishment is one with “longevity”. The Golden Dragon (originally called Dragons Castle) on Castle Street is celebrating over 50 years in the business, and is still going stronger than ever.
Mr Chan honed his dim sum skills from Hong Kong and came to Edinburgh 1978 to join other partners in opening Nam King Chinese restaurant in South Clerk Street , Edinburgh. His main clients were the local Edinburgh Chinese serving Dim Sum during the day and banquet menu in the evening…satisfying the Chinese palate!!!
By 1984 he had moved across to the Dragons Castle, working as Head Chef. Following the death of Mr Lim and the Lim family leaving Edinburgh, Mr Chan took over the restaurant since 1994 to its present day embellishing our Scottish ingredients to satisfy our present day diners.
If homemade and handmade authentic Cantonese food is what you are looking for, then the Golden Dragon is the place to go – 50 years worth of visitors (including many repeat visitors) are proof! All visitors near or far have remembered us and still revisit us to this day. Well done Mr Chan!!!
Golden Dragon is a great place for convenience for yearly events such as the AUGUST fireworks or Hogmanay. We are close to all event venues within city centre and Castle Street is often a focal meeting point as just 1 minute to Princes Street and round the corner from George Street.
After your meal step outside and admire the full view of the castle. Castle Street is 1 minute walk to Princes St and Princes Street Gardens. Castle Street faces the entrance to Princes Street Gardens convenient for guests who wishes to go for a stroll in the gardens or families for a play in the park after their meal at Golden Dragon.
Formerly known as the Dragons Castle Mr Chan was formerly the Head Chef for Mr Lim.
The restaurant premise has been running as a Chinese Restaurant for almost 5 decades making us a very old and well established restaurant. Our success to date explains our strong presence in the heart of Edinburgh. We still have guests visiting us from Dragon Castle days bringing family members of recent generations.
Here are some early day photos of Mr Chan who has kept the history of the restaurant since the Dragon Castle days:
Here is a more recent photo of Mr Chan and former colleague and close friend from Hong Kong. Both learned from the same Dim Sum Master.
